Mandrake Root

The Mandrake Root, or Podophyllum peltatum, is an herb native to the New World and has been used for centuries by Native Americans to treat disorders such as constipation, rheumatism and liver disorders. Other purported medicinal qualities of the Mandrake Root Cut include its use as a topical treatment for wart removal. Recently, its potential effectiveness in combating serious conditions such as leukemia has been the focus of research.

Podophyllum peltatum is found growing in parts of northeastern North America and has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. Mandrake Root is sometimes called the umbrella plant, because of its similar appearance to a closed umbrella when it first appears each spring. The plant itself grows to about a foot in height and then spreads out. Mandrake Root will produce a fruit, however it is rather unsavory, and not very tasty to consume.

Mandrake Root consists of the dried rhizome and connected roots. As with all herbal remedies, be sure to consult with doctor before beginning a regime of use. Mandrake Root Powder has been prescribed by some herbalists as a topical herbal treatment for warts and care must be taken when applying to use only on the tissue needed, or it can damage surrounding tissue.

Mandrake Root is thought by some to be a laxative and as a means of removing intestinal parasites. The root has been used as a tonic for liver, lung, and stomach ailments. A decoction was made by boiling the roots in water as a treatment for rheumatism.
